Gruesome Discovery makes an opponent discard two cards for four mana — passable rate, but the morbid rider (they discard at random instead of choosing) is the only reason to run it. Without a creature dying the same turn, it's a worse Distress that costs twice as much.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Gruesome Discovery is marginal — four mana for targeted discard arrives too late to strip anything relevant from a three-player table that's been goldfish-drawing for turns. Pauper is the one format where it sees real consideration, since the morbid trigger is achievable and the card pool for hand disruption is shallow enough that four-mana discard spells compete. In Legacy, Modern, and Vintage, it doesn't register — those formats have Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, and Hymn to Tourach doing the same job for one or two mana.

Price Context
Current price
$0.07 bulk tier
At $0.07, Gruesome Discovery is deep bulk — the kind of card that shows up in bulk lots and never climbs. There's no competitive demand driving a reprint scare, so the price is stable in the way irrelevance is stable.
