Grond, the Gatebreaker hits the table as a massive trampling beater that buffs your other attacking creatures and punishes blocked creatures with -1/-1 counters — all on a body that scales with the number of creatures you control. The cost is real: nine mana is a serious ask, and without haste it needs a full rotation to connect.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Grond, the Gatebreaker is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but its home is Commander — nine mana is simply unplayable in competitive 60-card formats where the game ends on turn three or four. In Legacy and Vintage it has no path to the battlefield outside of reanimation, which would rather target something immediately game-ending. Commander is the one format that regularly reaches the mana counts Grond demands, and the multiplayer board state rewards its wide-army scaling better than any 1v1 context could. Oathbreaker is technically an option but the faster pace makes it a fringe inclusion at best.

$0.19 bulk tier
At $0.19, Grond, the Gatebreaker is deep bulk — easy to pick up as a throw-in or from a bargain bin. Bulk rares with narrow, high-mana-cost niches rarely climb without a tournament breakout that isn't coming for a nine-mana creature, so treat it as a cheap role-player rather than a spec.
