Grisly Ritual kills a creature and replaces itself — two effects stapled together for three mana at instant speed. It's a fine rate in Pauper and budget Commander, but it never competes with Murder plus a cantrip in formats where those exist.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Grisly Ritual is most relevant in Pauper, where instant-speed removal that draws a card is genuinely scarce and the three-mana slot is workable. In Commander it's a budget option — the draw cushions the inefficiency, but three mana at sorcery-speed equivalence on removal is below the bar most 100-card decks can afford. Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, and Vintage have removal so efficient that Grisly Ritual never sees play in those formats. Oathbreaker's tighter resource environment is probably the format outside Pauper where it's most justifiable.
