Grip of Phyresis steals an equipped creature's Equipment and puts a Phyresis counter on it — at instant speed, for three mana — which is a significant tempo swing against any deck leaning on Swords, Greaves, or Boots. It's niche enough that you only want it when your opponents reliably suit up their commanders, but in that context it's one of the most punishing answers blue has.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Grip of Phyresis is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, and Commander is the only place it sees real play. Equipment is everywhere in the format — Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots are in a huge share of decks, and commander-centric voltron builds lean on Swords of X and Y as their primary win condition — so Grip of Phyresis has consistent targets. Legacy and Vintage both have it on the legal list, but neither format rewards sorcery-speed-adjacent interaction that requires the opponent to have an equipped creature in play, so it doesn't see meaningful competitive use there.

Price Context
Current price
$0.32 bulk tier
At $0.32, Grip of Phyresis is deep bulk — you're picking this out of a commons box, not tracking it on a buylist. Demand is narrow enough that it's unlikely to spike, but at this price there's no reason not to own a copy if your meta has any Equipment-heavy decks.
