Grip of Desolation exiles a creature and a land simultaneously — a two-for-one that answers indestructible threats and strips a mana source in the same action. Six mana is steep, but no other single card at this price point combines permanent removal with land destruction on a split target.

Commander is where Grip of Desolation actually sees play — six mana is survivable in a 40-life format with ramp, and exiling both a creature and a land matters most when commanders can be recurred from the command zone and greedy manabases are everywhere. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer, six mana for a sorcery-speed two-for-one is simply too slow; dedicated removal and land destruction each cost a fraction of that at instant speed. Vintage has the same problem compounded. Grip of Desolation belongs in Commander and nowhere else.

Price Context
Current price
$0.20 bulk tier
At $0.20, Grip of Desolation is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not demand. That price is stable because the card sees almost no competitive play, so don't expect movement in either direction.
