Granite Shard deals 1 damage at a time for either a mana or a life payment — a repeatable ping that doubles as reach for aggressive strategies and a way to pick off small utility creatures. The cost structure is real: three mana to cast plus an ongoing tax means it competes poorly against any permanent that pings for free or draws a card.

In Commander, Granite Shard occupies the bottom rung of repeatable damage effects — 40 life totals and three opponents make one-damage pings functionally irrelevant for closing games, and the slot is almost always better spent on actual removal. Legacy and Vintage have access to it but no reason to run it; anything it does, Cursed Scroll or Ensnaring Bridge does better in the controlling shells where slow incremental damage might matter. Modern technically allows it and equally ignores it. Granite Shard is a card that was modest at release and has only gotten further from relevance as the card pool has grown.

Price Context
Current price
$0.24 bulk tier
At $0.24, Granite Shard is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not power. Demand is low enough that this price is stable by default rather than by merit, and there's no trajectory that lifts it.
