Gouged Zealot puts a damage-dealing death trigger on every creature you control, turning board wipes and trades into a punishing ping storm against your opponents. The cost is real — it's a five-mana enchantment that does nothing the turn it enters — but in sacrifice and aristocrats shells, that payoff compounds fast enough to justify the slot.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Gouged Zealot does its best work, slotting into sacrifice and token strategies that generate enough creature deaths to weaponize the trigger repeatedly across a table. Pauper is the only other format where it sees meaningful play, since at common the card fills a genuine role in go-wide black decks that lack access to more efficient aristocrats payoffs. In Legacy, Modern, and Vintage it's simply outclassed — five mana for a passive damage trigger doesn't compete with the speed and density of those formats. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander: powerful in the right shell, irrelevant outside it.
