Gisa's Favorite Shovel turns every creature death into a Zombie token and lets you sacrifice that token to draw a card — on a single Equipment that costs two mana to cast and two to equip. In Malik, Grim Manipulator and similar sacrifice-hungry decks, that loop of token generation plus card draw is exactly the engine you want on the board as early as turn two.

Malik, Grim Manipulator
Malik, Grim Manipulator forces opponents to sacrifice creatures, and Gisa's Favorite Shovel converts every one of those deaths into a Zombie token you can immediately feed back into sacrifice outlets for cards — the two cards form a self-sustaining loop that keeps your hand full while your opponents' boards empty.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Gisa's Favorite Shovel is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but its home is squarely Commander — the longer game gives the incremental token-and-draw engine time to compound, and multiplayer tables mean far more creatures dying per game than any 1v1 format. In Legacy and Vintage, two mana to cast plus two to equip is too slow against the format's threat density, and dedicated sacrifice payoffs have faster, more redundant infrastructure already. Oathbreaker sits closer to Commander in texture, so the Shovel can pull its weight there in the right self-sacrifice shell.

Pricing data for Gisa's Favorite Shovel isn't currently available, so check Scryfall or TCGPlayer for the current market rate before picking up copies. Given its narrow but genuine synergy with sacrifice commanders, it tends to stay affordable — it's not the kind of card that commands a premium outside its niche.
