Gingerbrute is a one-mana artifact creature that hits players who can't block it with a Food token creature, and that evasion plus food synergy punches well above its cost. It's a staple in Winota, Joiner of Forces decks as a cheap non-Human attacker, and Samwise Gamgee turns every Food it generates into a recursive engine.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Winota, Joiner of Forces
Gingerbrute is one of the most common non-Human attackers in Winota, Joiner of Forces decks precisely because it costs one mana and attacks the turn it enters — triggering Winota immediately and flooding the board with Human creatures off the top.

Goro-Goro and Satoru
Goro-Goro and Satoru reward attacking with creatures that have haste or evasion, and Gingerbrute provides both by paying one mana to gain haste — making it a reliable first-strike attacker that consistently triggers the commander's token generation.

Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender
Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender grows whenever a Food is sacrificed, and Gingerbrute generates a Food on attack while also being an artifact creature that contributes to the same tribal synergies — it's one of the deck's most efficient double-dippers.

Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut
Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut turns every artifact creature into a 5/3 trampler, and Gingerbrute's built-in evasion stacks on top — giving you a cheap attacker that can slip through blockers even before Graaz enters.

Gonti, Night Minister
Gonti, Night Minister cares about spending life and generating value from opponent resources, and Gingerbrute's Food production provides a low-cost life buffer while its artifact creature status feeds sacrifice or artifact-count payoffs in that shell.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Gingerbrute earns its slot almost entirely on synergy — it's not a power card, it's a role-player in Food, artifact, or non-Human-attacker strategies where one mana for a guaranteed evasive attacker is the exact ask. In Pauper and Pioneer aggro, Gingerbrute has seen fringe play as a one-drop that dodges ground stalls and incidentally gains life, though it rarely makes main decks outside dedicated Food shells. Legacy, Vintage, and Modern don't want it — the bar for one-drops is too high, and Gingerbrute's ceiling is too low to compete with the format's threats. Standard and Pioneer Food synergy decks are the closest thing to a competitive home, and even there it's a supporting piece rather than a headliner.

$0.25 bulk tier
At $0.25, Gingerbrute is deep bulk — widely available and unlikely to drop further given how often it's reprinted and how broadly legal it is. Picking up copies costs almost nothing, and in synergy decks that want it, there's no cheaper alternative that does the same job.
