Gideon's Company enters as a 1/1 and grows every time you gain life, making it a legitimate threat in any lifegain shell that can protect it long enough to snowball. The payoff is real, but five mana is a steep ask for a creature that does nothing the turn it arrives — Agatha's Soul Cauldron aside, you need dedicated support to make this worthwhile.

Commander is the only format where Gideon's Company earns a slot, and even there it needs the right shell — dedicated lifegain commanders with repeated triggers across a long game are the only context where a five-mana 1/1 is acceptable. In Modern and Pioneer it's a non-starter; those formats kill you before the counters accumulate, and better payoffs exist at every point on the curve. Legacy and Vintage are similarly hostile — the card is legal but irrelevant. Oathbreaker could support it if your planeswalker and signature spell generate enough life triggers, but it's still a fringe inclusion.
