Ghastly Death Tyrant turns every creature death into a 2/2 zombie factory while swinging as a 6/5 flier — that's a board-state engine and threat stapled together for six mana. The rate is real, and in any black deck that expects creatures to die, it earns its slot.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Ghastly Death Tyrant does its best work — six-mana payoffs are acceptable in a 40-life format, and aristocrats or token-swarm shells give it a steady supply of dying creatures to fuel the zombie stream. Pauper is where this gets interesting: as a common, it's a legitimate late-game threat in black-based sacrifice lists that can actually support the mana cost. Legacy and Vintage are both legal, but Ghastly Death Tyrant is far too slow and too fair for those formats — it will never see play there. Oathbreaker mirrors the Commander read: fine in the right shell, absent from anything faster.

Price Context
Current price
$0.15 bulk tier
At $0.15, Ghastly Death Tyrant is pure bulk — you're picking it out of a dollar box, not tracking it on a buylist. Bulk rares at this price point don't appreciably move unless a format breaks them, and nothing on the horizon does that here.
