Gearseeker Serpent is a 5/6 that costs next to nothing in an artifacts-matter deck — each artifact you control shaves a generic mana off the casting cost, and it can tap those same artifacts to swing unblocked. The floor is a clunky eight-mana 5/6; the ceiling is a free evasive threat that closes games.

In Commander, Gearseeker Serpent earns its slot in artifact-dense builds where the cost reduction consistently brings it down to two or three mana by the midgame. Outside of Commander, it sees occasional Pauper play in Affinity shells where cheap artifacts make it a realistic turn-two or turn-three threat with built-in unblockability. In Modern and Pioneer it competes with faster, more resilient payoffs and rarely makes the cut. Legacy and Vintage have far more broken things to do with artifacts. Pauper is the sweet spot — Gearseeker Serpent is one of the format's most efficient common finishers in the right shell.

Gearseeker Serpent is a common, so copies are widely available and typically sell for well under a dollar. At that price point there's no reason to hesitate if you're building an artifacts-matter Commander deck or a Pauper Affinity list.
