Creature — Human Soldier

Ward {1}
If it's neither day nor night, it becomes day as this creature enters.
Whenever day becomes night or night becomes day, look at the top four cards of your library. You may reveal a creature card with mana value 3 or less from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.

Gavony Dawnguard card art
Gavony Dawnguard puts a permanent +1/+1 counter on every creature you control at the beginning of each end step — not just yours — which means it compounds fast in go-wide token builds. Four mana for a 3/4 vigilance body is fair, and the effect does real work without any setup.

Format Analysis

In Commander, Gavony Dawnguard is a legitimate roleplayer in any deck that goes wide — the end-step trigger fires on every player's end step, so a four-player pod can mean three free counter distributions per round. In Modern and Pioneer, it's too slow and too fair to compete; four mana for a 3/4 that slowly pumps your board gets outpaced by the format's threats before the effect matters. Legacy and Vintage don't want it at all. Gavony Dawnguard's home is squarely in Commander, specifically in white-green or multicolor token strategies where the cumulative effect compounds into a board state opponents can't race.

Price Context

Current price

$0.11 bulk tier

At $0.11, Gavony Dawnguard is pure bulk — no financial risk whatsoever to pick up a copy. It's unlikely to spike without a breakout Commander printing that makes end-step counter engines suddenly essential, so buy it for the effect, not as a hold.
