Garrison Sergeant enters as a 3/3 and pumps every other creature you control that has defender by +2/+2 until end of turn — a board-wide buff stapled to a body. At four mana for a 3/3 with no inherent evasion, you're paying purely for that trigger, which means it only earns its slot in a dedicated defender shell.

Garrison Sergeant is a Commander card in the most literal sense — it does nothing meaningful outside a dedicated defender-tribal shell, and those shells only exist at the EDH table. In Pauper, defender aggro decks like Walls have shown up, but Garrison Sergeant's four-mana cost is too slow for that format's tempo demands. Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, and Vintage have zero interest in a vanilla-statted four-drop that requires a critical mass of defenders to generate any value. Commander is the one place where a Arcades, the Strategist or Doran, the Siege Tower build can put enough defenders on the battlefield to make that +2/+2 trigger swing a combat step.

Price Context
Current price
$0.09 bulk tier
At $0.09, Garrison Sergeant is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a box at your LGS without thinking twice. It's unlikely to appreciate; supply is high, demand is narrow, and even within defender-tribal Commander lists it competes for slots against more efficient payoffs.
