Fungal Infection does two things on one card for one mana: it kills a small creature and leaves a 1/1 Saproling behind. That rate is good enough to earn a slot in any black-green deck that cares about tokens, and Slimefoot, the Stowaway turns both halves into direct damage.

Slimefoot, the Stowaway
Every Saproling Fungal Infection creates triggers Slimefoot, the Stowaway for a free drain, so the spell reads 'destroy target creature with 1 or less toughness, deal 1 damage, gain 1 life' — all at instant speed for one mana.

In Commander, Fungal Infection earns its slot in Saproling and Fungus builds where the token is the point and the kill clause is a bonus. Pauper is where it sees its most competitive play — one-mana instant-speed removal that replaces itself with a body is genuinely above rate at common. In Modern and Pioneer it sits below the power threshold; black removal spells compete with Fatal Push and Infernal Grasp, which don't leave you needing a creature with one or fewer toughness to trade. Legacy and Vintage don't want it at all — the fail condition of whiffing on targets is too steep when the format is full of zero-power mana dorks and utility creatures with two toughness.

$0.23 bulk tier
At $0.23, Fungal Infection is deep bulk — buy a playset without thinking about it. Bulk commons with narrow Commander homes don't spike, so there's no urgency, but there's also no reason to wait.
