Friendly Fire deals damage equal to a creature's power to its controller — at instant speed, for three mana, with no targeting restrictions beyond 'creature you don't control.' It's narrow but efficient in the right shell; outside of decks that inflate opponent creatures' power, it's worse than a simple removal spell.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Friendly Fire is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it earns a slot almost exclusively in Commander. Constructed formats have no shortage of cleaner, cheaper removal, and Friendly Fire's damage-equals-power clause is rarely better than a straight burn spell in those contexts. In Commander, the card finds its niche in decks that gift opponents oversized creatures — Zedruu the Greathearted, Phelddagrif, or any Group Hug shell that hands out big tokens — then punishes those same creatures for existing. Outside that angle, three mana for conditional damage sits below the format's removal bar.

Price Context
Current price
$0.05 bulk tier
At $0.05, Friendly Fire is deep bulk — you're paying pennies for a card with a narrow use case. Don't expect the price to move; the demand ceiling is low and supply is high.
