Forerunner of Slaughter gives any colorless or black creature haste for one mana at instant speed — that's a repeatable combat trick stapled to a 3/2 body for two mana. In any deck that cares about Eldrazi or colorless threats entering the battlefield swinging immediately, it earns its slot without debate.

In Commander, Forerunner of Slaughter is a role-player in Eldrazi and colorless-matters builds — the activated ability covering all colorless permanents is broader than it looks, and the activation cost is low enough to use multiple times in a single turn cycle. Outside of Commander, it sees essentially no competitive play in Modern or Pioneer, where two-mana 3/2s need to do more than enable haste on a narrow creature type to justify inclusion. Legacy and Vintage have no interest either — the formats move too fast for this kind of setup card. Forerunner of Slaughter is a Commander card through and through, and even there it belongs only in the right archetype.

Price Context
Current price
$0.18 bulk tier
At $0.18, Forerunner of Slaughter is deep bulk — you'll find it in any dollar-rare bin without effort. It's unlikely to climb; the effect is too narrow to generate demand outside its niche, so grab it cheaply when you need it and don't think twice about the price.
