Forbidding Spirit locks down all creatures your opponents control until your next turn — a one-sided Ghostly Prison on legs that buys you a full combat step of immunity the moment it enters. The cost is real: three mana for a 2/3 that does nothing on offense and blanks on subsequent turns, so you're paying ETB premium on a body that doesn't scale.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t

|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Forbidding Spirit is a narrow but functional defensive piece — best in flicker shells where the ETB trigger can be replayed, worst as a standalone inclusion that goes blank after the turn it enters. In Modern and Pioneer, it's too slow and fragile to compete with the interaction density at those tables; the effect exists on better bodies or cheaper spells. Legacy makes it irrelevant outright. Oathbreaker gives Forbidding Spirit slightly more room if the planeswalker plan needs one protected turn to ultimate, but the competition for three-mana defensive plays is stiff even there.

Price Context
Current price
$0.25 bulk tier
At $0.25, Forbidding Spirit is bulk — it costs nothing to pick up and nothing to lose if it underperforms. That price reflects a card with a real but conditional effect, and it's unlikely to move unless a flicker commander pushes sustained demand.
