Flowstone Mauler hits the board as a 6/6 trampler for five mana — that's a legitimate threat — but the built-in drawback of paying R each upkeep to keep it from shrinking makes it a liability in long games. Creatures that require ongoing mana investment to stay relevant don't belong in Commander.
Format Analysis

| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Flowstone Mauler is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but sees essentially no competitive play in any of them. In Commander, a 6/6 trampler for five is passable on rate, but the R-per-upkeep tax to avoid a permanent power-and-toughness loss makes it worse the longer the game goes — and Commander games go long. Legacy and Vintage have access to far more efficient threats at every point on the curve, so Flowstone Mauler never registers there. In Oathbreaker, the faster pace of the format makes the upkeep cost slightly less punishing, but you still have better options.
