Flatten trades instant speed for nothing — a sorcery that costs four mana to destroy one nonland permanent is a bad deal when Murder, Generous Gift, and Anguished Unmaking all exist at three or fewer. Run Flatten only when you've exhausted every better option at the same budget.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Flatten competes in the most removal-dense format in the game, and four mana at sorcery speed is a steep ask when the table has three opponents threatening creatures, artifacts, and enchantments simultaneously. Pauper is the one format where Flatten sees any real consideration, since the commons card pool trims the competition enough that four-mana catch-all removal becomes more palatable. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer the card is legal but effectively invisible — formats that punish tempo losses this severe have no use for it. Oathbreaker and Vintage follow the same logic as Commander: better options exist at every price point.

Price Context
Current price
$0.06 bulk tier
At $0.06, Flatten is deep bulk — the kind of card you find at the bottom of a draft chaff pile. The price will hold because bulk floors at a nickel, not because anyone is seeking it out.
