Firespitter Whelp card art
Firespitter Whelp puts a repeatable source of noncombat damage on the board for two mana, and that damage triggers every spell-cast payoff in the Izzet toolbox. In Niv-Mizzet, Visionary decks especially, the ping-per-spell loop it enables is the whole game plan in miniature.

Commander is the natural home for Firespitter Whelp — the 100-card, multiplayer environment gives the ping trigger enough targets and enough spell volume to matter across a whole game. In 60-card competitive formats like Modern and Pioneer, a two-mana 1/2 that deals one damage per spell cast doesn't come close to the rate those formats demand, and it will see essentially zero play there. Standard is legal but similarly uncompetitive outside of very specific limited-style brews. Legacy and Vintage are technically legal but the card has no role in either format's power landscape. Oathbreaker mirrors the Commander dynamic at a smaller scale — if your planeswalker cares about noncombat damage or spell-cast triggers, Firespitter Whelp earns its slot.

Pricing data for Firespitter Whelp isn't available in current market feeds, so check Scryfall or TCGPlayer for the live number before buying. Given its narrow Commander niche and absence from competitive 60-card formats, it's almost certainly a bulk or near-bulk pickup.
