Fettergeist is a 3/4 flyer for three mana — legitimately above-rate on stats — but it demands you pay one mana per creature you control at the start of each upkeep or sacrifice it. In any deck running a meaningful board presence, that cost snowballs fast enough to make the card a liability rather than a threat.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Fettergeist is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it sees essentially no competitive play in any of them. In Commander, the upkeep tax scales against you harder than anywhere else — the format rewards wide boards, and Fettergeist punishes you for building one. In Legacy and Vintage, a three-mana 3/4 flyer with a self-destruct clause simply doesn't clear the bar when better blue threats exist at every price point. Modern has long since outpaced it. Fettergeist's niche, if it has one, is a deck deliberately keeping its creature count near zero — a control shell that treats the upkeep cost as negligible.

Price Context
Current price
$0.04 bulk tier
At $0.04, Fettergeist is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard and sleeve space, not power. There's no real floor to fall through at this price, but there's no upside catalyst either; nothing in the current meta is about to make a conditional 3/4 flyer a chase card.
