Fathom Trawl card art
Fathom Trawl refills your hand with as many non-land cards as you want from the top of your library — the catch is everything you don't take goes to the bottom, making it a selective dig rather than raw card advantage. Six mana is a real cost, but in the right deck the ability to cherry-pick combo pieces or answers on demand is worth it.

Fathom Trawl is a Commander card through and through — the six-mana ask is tolerable in a 100-card singleton format where redundancy is scarce and finding the exact piece you need matters more than raw efficiency. In Legacy or Vintage, it is simply too slow; those formats have cheaper, instant-speed options that don't telegraph your hand so plainly. Modern technically allows it but the competitive bar is higher than Fathom Trawl clears. In Commander, it slots best in spell-heavy blue decks that can use the bottom-of-library positioning as a feature, not a bug — Magecraft payoffs and storm-adjacent builds that chain through the deck appreciate the precise selection.

Price Context

Current price

$0.36 bulk tier

At $0.36, Fathom Trawl is deep bulk — easy to pick up as a throw-in or from a dollar box. Bulk rares with niche Commander appeal tend to stay flat rather than spike unless a commander is printed that makes the effect broken, so treat it as a cheap include, not a hold.
