The fused version is the entire reason to run it; either half alone is underpowered for Commander, but together it cleanly handles hexproof and indestructible permanents that straight removal misses.

In Commander, Far // Away earns its slot specifically through fusion — bouncing a hexproof creature while making an opponent sacrifice another permanent is two-for-one interaction at instant speed, and it dodges the usual protection-keyword walls. In Modern and Pioneer, the fused version's four-mana price tag is too slow for a format that needs interaction on turns one and two, so it sees essentially no competitive play there. Legacy and Vintage have access to more efficient split-second or zero-mana disruption, pushing Far // Away fully out of those environments. Oathbreaker is the closest analogue to Commander in terms of pace, and the same logic applies — fuse is the payoff, and slower games give you the mana to use it.
