False Mourning puts a permanent from any graveyard directly onto the battlefield — not into hand, onto the field — for one green mana at instant speed. That combination of cost, speed, and destination makes it one of the most efficient graveyard-to-battlefield effects green has ever seen.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where False Mourning does its best work: graveyards fill fast in multiplayer, and one mana at instant speed to reanimate any permanent — yours or an opponent's — is a massive return. Legacy and Vintage legality is mostly academic; those formats don't lack for busted reanimation, and False Mourning's sorcery-speed restriction on deckbuilding (it's an instant, but targets are often set up over turns) doesn't offer enough over existing options to see serious play there. Oathbreaker can leverage it similarly to Commander, especially in green shells that fill the yard quickly.

Budget Alternatives
Cheaper options that do most of the same work
Eternal Witness and Regrowth both cost under a dollar and return cards to hand rather than the battlefield, which is the key trade-off — you lose the immediate board impact False Mourning provides. If battlefield entry matters less than raw recursion, either of those covers the function for a fraction of the price.
Price Context
Current price
$16.23 mid tier
At $16.23, False Mourning sits in mid-tier pricing for a niche instant-speed reanimation effect with a small print run. The price reflects scarcity more than ubiquity — it's not a staple in most lists, so if your deck specifically wants instant-speed battlefield reanimation in green, this is one of very few cards that delivers it.
