Extinction Event exiles an entire parity of the board — odd or even mana value — making it one of the few sweepers that dodges indestructible, regeneration, and graveyard recursion simultaneously. Four mana for that effect is the deal; the catch is that you share the odd/even split with your opponents, so it rewards building around a single mana-value profile.
Format Analysis

Commander is where Extinction Event earns its reputation — four-player tables mean the board gets wide fast, and a well-timed even sweep can erase three opponents' threats while leaving your odd-costed creatures untouched if you've built toward it. The exile clause matters enormously in a format full of Reanimate effects and Bolas's Citadel lines. In Modern and Pioneer it sees fringe play in midrange and control shells as a sweeper that handles the graveyard synergies those formats produce, though faster clocks limit its window. Legacy and Vintage have more efficient answers and the card rarely appears there. Extinction Event is functionally a Commander card that happens to be legal everywhere else.

Budget Alternatives
Cheaper options that do most of the same work
Crux of Fate and Damnation hit every creature regardless of mana value for $2–$5, making them more reliable catch-alls if your meta is creature-type agnostic — the trade-off is that they destroy rather than exile, leaving recursive threats alive. If the exile clause is the reason you want Extinction Event, Farewell covers the same ground and more for under $5, though it costs six mana and doesn't let you choose odd versus even.
Price Context
Current price
$59.99 premium tier
At $59.99, Extinction Event sits firmly in the premium tier — expensive for a sweeper, even one with this level of utility. The price reflects genuine Commander demand and a single printing, so it's unlikely to drop significantly without a reprint.
