Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Experimental Synthesizer slots cleanly into any red artifact or sacrifice deck that wants cheap, self-replacing card advantage — the combination of an enters trigger and a leaves trigger on a two-mana artifact is exactly what those strategies need at low opportunity cost. In Pauper it sees real play in artifact-aggro shells where the impulse draw replaces itself efficiently and the common print keeps it accessible. Modern and Pioneer artifact combo decks can technically run it, but those formats have enough density of faster options that Experimental Synthesizer rarely makes the cut outside budget builds. Legacy and Vintage have zero interest — the power floor is simply too low. The card belongs in Commander and Pauper; everywhere else it's a placeholder.

Price Context
Current price
$0.47 bulk tier
At $0.47, Experimental Synthesizer is true bulk — the kind of card you pick up without thinking and slot into any red artifact deck that needs another cheap draw piece. Supply is wide enough that the price has nowhere meaningful to go, so grab copies for their gameplay value and don't hold them speculatively.
