Expanding Ooze enters as a X/X where X is the number of lands you control, then grows every time another land enters — it's a self-scaling threat that compounds naturally with ramp strategies. The cost is that it does nothing without a critical mass of lands already in play, making it a mid-to-late-game payoff rather than an early play.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Expanding Ooze belongs — landfall synergies are deep, games go long enough for it to reach lethal size, and the density of fetch lands and land ramp spells means it routinely enters as a 15/15 or larger by mid-game. In Pauper it's legal but the format lacks the land-drop density to make it threatening; it will sit as a medium-sized vanilla creature more often than not. Legacy and Vintage are too fast for a creature that does nothing until you've deployed a significant board state, and neither format is interested in this kind of incremental scaling. Oathbreaker can support it in the right land-heavy shell, but the smaller deck size limits how consistently you'll assemble the engine Expanding Ooze needs to matter.

$0.11 bulk tier
At $0.11, Expanding Ooze is pure bulk — you're paying pennies for a card with a real ceiling in the right Commander deck. Bulk rares that see genuine play in a popular archetype tend to stay in this range, so don't expect appreciation, but there's no reason not to pick up a copy immediately.
