Excommunicate removes any creature from the board and blanks your opponent's next draw, but it costs three mana at sorcery speed and doesn't actually answer the threat permanently. Tempo play with no card advantage attached — it's outclassed in almost every format by cheaper or cleaner options.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Excommunicate is too slow and too impermanent to earn a slot — three mana at sorcery speed to set an opponent back one turn is rarely enough when you're facing three other boards. Pauper is where Excommunicate sees its most legitimate play, since the common card pool is constrained enough that topdeck manipulation matters and tempo swings hit harder. In Legacy and Vintage the card is legal but irrelevant; those formats answer threats with hard removal or counterspells at a fraction of the cost. Oathbreaker can occasionally leverage the delayed-draw punishment in aggressive white shells, but even there better options exist.

Price Context
Current price
$0.07 bulk tier
At $0.07, Excommunicate is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard and nothing else. That price is stable because demand is essentially zero; don't expect it to move in either direction.
