Excavation Technique card art
Excavation Technique puts a token on the board for every nonland permanent an opponent sacrifices, turning their removal and sacrifice outlets into your army. The cost is leaning on opponents to actually sacrifice things — in a table that isn't cooperating, it stalls out fast. In the right shell, specifically alongside Kambal, Profiteering Mayor, it's a consistent engine; outside of it, it's a role-player at best.

Kambal, Profiteering Mayor generates tokens whenever opponents cast noncreature spells, and Excavation Technique extends that same drain-and-gain logic to sacrifice triggers — together they reward opponents for doing almost anything, stacking up bodies from two separate angles.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict

Excavation Technique is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but the only format where it's actually worth slotting is Commander. In Legacy and Vintage, a four-mana enchantment that requires opponent cooperation to generate value doesn't clear the bar — those formats end games before this card does anything meaningful. In Commander, the multiplayer environment means sacrifice triggers happen constantly, and Excavation Technique scales with the table size in a way it simply can't in one-on-one play.

Price Context

Current price

$0.34 bulk tier

At $0.34, Excavation Technique is deep bulk — easy to pick up as a throw-in or cheap add to a token or aristocrats Commander list. Bulk enchantments at this price rarely appreciate unless they land on a ban-list-adjacent combo, and nothing here suggests that trajectory.
