Evernight Shade is a repeatedly pumpable black threat that turns excess mana into a lethal attacker, and its undying means trading it off or sacrificing it to Yawgmoth, Thran Physician puts it right back on the battlefield with a counter. The catch is that every pump costs a full black mana and the base stats are negligible, so it demands a deck that generates both mana surplus and a reason to care about an infinite-counter loop — Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn // Isilu, Carrier of Twilight fits that profile almost as cleanly as Yawgmoth does.

Yawgmoth, Thran Physician
Yawgmoth, Thran Physician sacrifices creatures to draw cards and spread -1/-1 counters, and Evernight Shade's undying means it returns from sacrifice with a +1/+1 counter that immediately offsets any -1/-1 Yawgmoth places on it — turning what would be a one-shot sacrifice fodder into a recursive engine piece.
Format Analysis

Evernight Shade sees almost no play in Legacy or Vintage, where the format's speed makes a 1/1 undying creature with a mana-intensive pump irrelevant. Modern is the same story — the card has never carved out a slot in competitive lists there. Commander is where Evernight Shade finds its home, specifically in mono-black or Golgari sacrifice builds that can loop undying creatures for incremental advantage. Outside of those dedicated engines, it remains a fringe inclusion even in Commander.
