Essence of the Wild card art
Every creature you put into play while Essence of the Wild is on the battlefield becomes a copy of it — a six-mana 6/6 with this same replacement effect — turning your token generators and reanimation spells into an avalanche of identical legends. The six-mana ask is steep, but pairing it with a card like Requiem Angel means every non-Spirit creature that dies spawns a token that immediately becomes another 6/6.

Format Analysis

Where it lives, where it can’t

FormatVerdict
commander
legacy
modern
pioneer
standard
vintage
pauper
oathbreaker

Commander is where Essence of the Wild actually gets to do something, because the format's slower clock gives you time to reach six mana and the singleton rule means opponents rarely pack the density of cheap removal needed to answer it before it spirals. In Legacy and Vintage it's a non-starter — six mana for a creature that doesn't impact the board the turn it arrives is a concession speech in those formats. Modern is technically legal but practically irrelevant for the same reason; the format's too fast and too efficient to let Essence of the Wild live long enough to matter. Oathbreaker sits closer to Commander in pace, and the right signature spell can make the copy-replacement effect explosive, but the pool of legal planeswalkers that synergize with it is narrow.

Price Context

Current price

$0.43 bulk tier

At $0.43, Essence of the Wild is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a trade binder or a bulk box rather than buy intentionally. Its narrow application keeps demand low enough that the price is unlikely to climb without a reprint featuring a new, high-profile combo partner.
