Eriette's Whisper is a two-mana instant that destroys a creature with the greatest power among all creatures on the board — no targeting restrictions, no conditions beyond that tiebreaker math. The cost is that it only hits the single biggest threat, so a board of medium-sized creatures laughs at it.

In Commander, Eriette's Whisper earns its slot in black decks that need cheap, instant-speed removal for the scariest thing at the table — Eldrazi titans, pumped voltron commanders, and combat-step game-enders all fall cleanly into its range. The catch is that tables with multiple large threats dilute its value, so it shines most in the early-to-mid game before boards get out of hand. In 1v1 formats like Modern and Pioneer, the power-based qualifier is too conditional — Path to Exile and Fatal Push answer more of the metagame without the restriction. Pauper gives it a reasonable home since common-legal removal is genuinely constrained and the biggest creature on a pauper board is usually the creature you most want dead.

$0.17 bulk tier
At $0.17, Eriette's Whisper is deep bulk — you're paying almost nothing for a card that does real work in the right shell. Bulk commons with narrow but genuine utility tend to stay in this range indefinitely, so there's no urgency either way; just grab copies whenever you sleeve up a black Commander deck that wants conditional spot removal.
