In Commander, Environmental Sciences earns its slot exclusively through the learn mechanic — without a learn spell to retrieve it from the sideboard, it never touches a game. Decks built around Iroh, Grand Lotus and similar lesson-synergy commanders treat it as guaranteed, because it's the most universally useful lesson at any point in the game. In Pauper, it sees niche play in learn-heavy tempo and control shells where the life gain matters and the basic land fetch smooths aggressive mana. Modern and Pioneer lists occasionally board it to support Expressive Iteration-era learn packages, but the card's ceiling in those formats is strictly functional, not powerful. Legacy and Vintage are too fast for a two-mana fix-and-gain to matter.
