Ensouled Scimitar is a 3/3 Spirit that equips itself to creatures for free — the floor is a 3/3 body, the ceiling is a flying, first-striking, +3/+2 buff that bounces between hosts. The five-mana equip-to-creature investment only pays off in decks that can exploit the self-animating trigger repeatedly, and anywhere else it's just an overcosted beater.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Ensouled Scimitar sees essentially no play in Legacy, Modern, or Vintage — five mana for a 3/3 that also functions as an equipment is nowhere near competitive in those formats. Commander is the only realistic home, and even there it occupies a narrow niche: decks that care about Spirits, Equipment, or self-animating artifacts can squeeze value from the dual nature, but most equipment-focused strategies would rather run something that costs less and equips for less. The self-equip trigger on creature death is the one genuinely interesting line — in sacrifice or recursion shells, the card can reattach itself after a host dies, which is at least worth considering.

Price Context
Current price
$0.23 bulk tier
At $0.23, Ensouled Scimitar is deep bulk — you're not paying for power, you're paying for a niche effect that almost nobody wants. Don't expect the price to move; the card has been cheap since release and nothing in the current design space is pushing demand upward.
