Empyrial Archangel is a Commander card through and through — the format's slower clock and multiplayer threat density give the redirect effect real work to do, and 40 life means you can absorb the turns needed to hit eight mana. In Legacy and Vintage it's a non-starter: eight mana is an entire game, and any shell with the resources to cast it has better things to do. Modern can theoretically support it in fringe ramp builds, but the format is too fast and too interactive to let it live long enough to matter. Commander is where Empyrial Archangel earns its keep, particularly in Angel tribal or pillow-fort strategies that can stall long enough to deploy it.
