Embersmith turns every artifact you cast into a free Shock — that passive damage output adds up fast in artifact-dense shells. Two mana for a 1/2 is an unremarkable body, but the trigger is the reason you're here.

In Commander, Embersmith earns a slot in artifact-heavy builds where you're casting multiple artifacts per turn cycle — Breya, Etherium Shaper and Alibou, Ancient Witness shells can ping down utility creatures or apply incidental pressure to planeswalkers without spending dedicated removal. In Legacy and Vintage, it's too slow and too fragile to compete; those formats have better engines for artifact synergy. Modern has enough cheap artifact payoffs that Embersmith occasionally shows up in fringe lists, but it rarely makes the cut over more impactful two-drops. Stick to Commander, where the trigger-per-cast math is most forgiving.

Price Context
Current price
$0.11 bulk tier
At $0.11, Embersmith is deep bulk — grab a copy out of a commons box without thinking twice. Demand isn't high enough to move the price, so don't expect it to appreciate, but you're also never overpaying.
