Elanor Gardner
Legendary Creature — Halfling Scout
When Elanor enters, create a Food token.
At the beginning of your end step, if you sacrificed a Food this turn, you may search your library for a basic land card, put that card onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.

Elanor Gardner puts a Food token into play every turn for free — that's life gain, sacrifice fodder, and artifact triggers all on a two-mana body. The Cabbage Merchant and every other Food-matters commander runs her because the incremental advantage is real and the cost to include her is nearly zero.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

The Cabbage Merchant
The Cabbage Merchant wants every Food token it can generate, and Elanor Gardner delivers one per turn on top of the combat step — that's two vectors of Food production stapled to a single two-card pair that snowballs quickly.

Samwise Gamgee
Samwise Gamgee triggers whenever a Food is sacrificed, so Elanor Gardner's steady token output feeds a loop of card draw and life gain that Samwise can ride all game.

The Goose Mother
The Goose Mother cares about Food as both a resource and a payoff, and Elanor Gardner supplements the commander's own token generation to keep the engine running even when the Goose is removed.

Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit // Sam, Loyal Attendant
Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit // Sam, Loyal Attendant leans on Food to keep Frodo fed and questing, and Elanor Gardner provides a reliable, recurring source that doesn't require spending cards or mana each turn.

Gyome, Master Chef
Gyome, Master Chef already floods the board with Food, and Elanor Gardner adds another consistent drip that ensures every player always has a Food to pop — which means Gyome's protection ability is always online.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Elanor Gardner earns her keep — recurring free Food tokens scale over a long game in a way that 1v1 formats never allow. In Legacy and Vintage she's technically legal but competes with formats built on fast threats and interaction that make a slow value engine irrelevant. Modern is the only constructed format with a real Food shell, and even there Elanor Gardner is too slow and too fair to displace the payoffs those decks already use. Oathbreaker is the one other format worth mentioning: any Food-matters signature spell or planeswalker makes her a viable include, and the two-mana entry cost is easier to stomach at smaller deck sizes.

Budget Alternatives
Cheaper options that do most of the same work
Horned Stoneseeker and Meriadoc Brandybuck both produce Food on entry and can slot into the same token-generation role for well under a dollar, though neither matches Elanor Gardner's every-turn upkeep trigger. If the recurring drip is specifically what you need, Spare Supplies and Wayfarer's Bauble give you artifact sacrifice fodder on demand but lack the creature type and the automatic repetition that make Elanor worth the slot.
Price Context
Current price
$5.80 mid tier
At $5.80, Elanor Gardner sits in the mid tier — not a budget throw-in, but not a painful inclusion either. The price is supported by concentrated demand from Hobbit and Food-matters Commander lists rather than broad cross-format play, so it's unlikely to spike but equally unlikely to crater while those archetypes stay popular.
