Echoing Decay hits a target creature and every other creature sharing its name for -2/-2 until end of turn — against token swarms or tribal mirrors, that's a one-mana board wipe. In singleton Commander it usually trades one-for-one, which makes it a budget removal spell that punishes specific archetypes hard and does minimum-viable work everywhere else.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Pauper is where Echoing Decay earns its reputation — token decks and Faerie mirrors make the name-matching clause live constantly, and two mana at instant speed is well within the format's range. In Commander, singleton construction means the mass-destruction upside rarely triggers, so Echoing Decay competes with cleaner unconditional removal and usually loses that fight unless the meta is tribal-heavy. Legacy and Vintage have access to it but almost never run it; the formats move too fast and the effect is too narrow compared to Fatal Push or Swords to Plowshares. Oathbreaker is the Commander-adjacent format most likely to reward it, since focused builds can create name-clustering scenarios more reliably.

Price Context
Current price
$0.20 bulk tier
At $0.20, Echoing Decay is deep bulk — there's no financial reason to hesitate picking up copies, and no expectation that price moves in either direction for a common with a narrow use case. Grab it for Pauper or a tribal-heavy Commander build and don't think twice about the cost.
