Eat to Extinction exiles any creature or planeswalker — no regeneration, no death triggers, no graveyard — and replaces itself with a scry 1 on the way out. Four mana is a real cost in black, but unconditional exile that replaces itself clears the bar for competitive Commander tables.

In Commander, Eat to Extinction earns its slot because the format is lousy with indestructible threats, recursive creatures, and planeswalkers that demand hard answers — exile covers all of them. It sees fringe play in Modern and Pioneer, where four mana is steep and format staples like Fatal Push and Sheoldred's Edict do more for less, but mono-black brews that lack cheaper options sometimes run it. In Legacy and Vintage the mana cost is simply too high given what those formats offer. Commander is where Eat to Extinction belongs.
