Early Winter enters and taps all lands without basic land types, then keeps them tapped — a punishing soft lock against nonbasic-heavy mana bases that can stall opponents for multiple turns. The cost is that it does nothing to basics, so decks running a high basic count shrug it off entirely.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t

In Commander, Early Winter is a stax piece aimed squarely at the format's greedy four- and five-color mana bases, where shocklands, triomes, and fetchlands dominate and basics are a rounding error — opponents can find themselves locked off colored mana for a full rotation of the table. In competitive and higher-bracket pods it loses some teeth, since those decks answer it fast or rebuild around it, but in mid-power metas it can singlehandedly buy you two or three extra turns. In 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer, Early Winter is a novelty at best — the card does nothing on the turn you play it and opponents untap immediately on their next upkeep, making it too slow to matter in a format measured in three-turn clocks. Legacy and Vintage have better prison effects at lower costs, and Standard play is situational enough that more reliable interaction earns the slot.

Price Context
Current price
$0.08 bulk tier
At $0.08, Early Winter is deep bulk — it costs less than a sleeve and represents essentially zero financial commitment to try. Bulk stax pieces rarely spike unless they find a dominant competitive home, and this one is too format-specific to Commander metas to expect meaningful price movement.
