Dutiful Return puts up to two creatures from your graveyard into your hand for four mana at sorcery speed — functional, but slow and replaceable. Cheaper and more flexible recursion exists at every price point, so Dutiful Return only earns a slot in the deepest budget builds.

In Commander, Dutiful Return competes against a crowded field of recursion spells, and four mana to return two cards to hand rarely clears the bar when Eternal Witness, Reanimate, and similar effects do more for less. Pauper is its best home — the card pool is shallow enough that sorcery-speed two-for-one recursion at common actually fills a real gap in black graveyard decks. Legacy, Vintage, Modern, and Pioneer all have redundant, faster options that make Dutiful Return irrelevant in competitive contexts. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander: the 20-life clock is faster, and you want recursion that hits the board, not the hand.
