Dungeon Shade is a fragile, overcosted black flyer whose pump ability requires swamps in hand — a resource you'd rather spend on spells. There are cheaper, more reliable threats at every point on the curve, and this one rarely justifies its slot.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Dungeon Shade sees essentially no competitive play in any format where it's legal. In Commander, black has access to far better recursive threats and evasive finishers, so Dungeon Shade competes in a crowded field and loses. Pauper is the one format where common black flyers matter, but even there the combination of a five-mana body and a discard-dependent pump makes it a fringe choice at best. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters — the card simply does nothing at those power levels.

unknown tier
Pricing data isn't currently available for Dungeon Shade, which itself signals how little demand exists. As a bulk common with negligible competitive presence, it almost certainly sits in the penny-bin range and isn't a priority pickup.
