Competitive and casual tables alike ignore a two-mana creature until it's too late, and ward 1 taxes the spot removal that would otherwise answer it for free. Outside Commander, Dune Drifter has seen fringe play in Modern and Pioneer cycling shells — specifically alongside Arclight Phoenix strategies — but it competes for slots against faster, more explosive payoffs and rarely makes the cut. Standard legality gives it the most accessible proving ground, where synergy density is lower and a growing threat with incidental protection punches above its mana cost.
