Drownyard Amalgam is a recursive, evasive threat that returns itself from the graveyard whenever you cast a spell that shares a type with it — giving blue-black creature-spell decks a body that's almost impossible to permanently answer. The cost is that it does nothing on its own; you need a deck built around Zombies, Horrors, or Merfolk to make the recursion trigger reliably.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Drownyard Amalgam slots into Zombie and Horror tribal builds that already want graveyard recursion, where it functions as a low-maintenance threat that punishes opponents for spending removal on it. Pauper is where it has the most competitive upside — blue-black Zombie and Horror shells at common depth can recur it consistently, and a self-returning body at three mana is genuinely taxing for that format's removal suites. In Modern and Pioneer the bar is simply too high; three mana for a 3/3 with conditional recursion doesn't compete with the efficiency available there. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters for the same reason, amplified.

$0.08 bulk tier
At $0.08, Drownyard Amalgam is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard and shipping, not the card. Bulk commons and uncommons with narrow tribal conditions don't appreciate, so grab a copy if the deck calls for it and don't think twice about the price.
