Drown in Sorrow wipes every creature with power 1 or less and puts a -1/-1 counter on each survivor — three mana for a board clear that doubles as a debuff is genuine value. It's the go-to early-game sweeper in black decks that need to survive token swarms without spending five mana to do it.

In Commander, Drown in Sorrow earns its slot in any black deck that expects token-heavy pods — it cleanly answers a Rhys the Redeemed or Krenko, Mob Boss board on turn three before things spiral. Pauper is where it's most competitive: three-mana sweepers at common rarity are rare, and the scry 1 rider is a meaningful bonus at that power level. Modern and Pioneer have enough cheaper or wider sweepers that Drown in Sorrow rarely makes the cut, though it's playable in sideboards targeting weenie strategies. Legacy and Vintage have too many threats above power 1 for this to matter.

Price Context
Current price
$0.16 bulk tier
At $0.16, Drown in Sorrow is deep bulk — grab a copy without thinking twice. Bulk sweepers don't tend to spike unless they hit Standard legality, and this one won't, so the price floor is stable.
