Driver of the Dead card art
Driver of the Dead turns its own death into a free creature — any nontoken with mana value 2 or less straight onto the battlefield, no mana required. At four mana for a 3/2 with no ETB, the body is unimpressive, but the trigger is real enough that The Master, Formed Anew and similar reanimation-loop commanders treat it as a combo enabler first and a creature second.

Commander is where Driver of the Dead earns its slot — sacrifice-based strategies and reanimator shells both want a free creature on death, and the four-mana cost matters far less when you're recurring it repeatedly through a loop. In Pauper, the common restriction keeps it competitively legal and it sees occasional use in sacrifice synergy builds where the free reload is worth the tempo. In every other 60-card format — Modern, Pioneer, Legacy, Vintage — Driver of the Dead is too slow and too small to compete; the death trigger is powerful in theory but the four-mana investment never recovers the tempo loss against faster decks.

Price Context

Current price

$0.03 bulk tier

At $0.03, Driver of the Dead is deep bulk — you'll find copies in any common box or quarter bin without trying. The price won't move; combo enablers at this power level that see play primarily in Commander don't accumulate demand fast enough to push off the floor.
