Dream Cache lets you look at the top three cards of your library and arrange them however you want — but you put two back, so you're sculpting the top rather than drawing ahead. At three mana as a sorcery, it's a strictly worse Brainstorm in most contexts, and the only reason to run it is a commander who cares specifically about what's sitting on top of the library. Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign is that commander.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign
Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign triggers whenever it deals combat damage by casting the top card of your library for free, so the ability to guarantee an odd-CMC spell sits there is worth the three-mana sorcery cost — Dream Cache is one of the most reliable ways to set up a free cast every attack step.

River Song
River Song draws a card whenever opponents cast spells not on their first spell of the turn, and stacks her experience from instants and sorceries cast from exile, making top-deck manipulation broadly useful; Dream Cache earns its slot by letting you sequence what River Song sees and ensuring the right spell is ready when a trigger fires.

Neera, Wild Mage
Neera, Wild Mage replaces your spells with random casts off the top of the library, so controlling what's sitting there is directly tied to how explosive that wild-magic trigger gets — Dream Cache lets you stack the top before Neera fires, trading a card in hand for a better average outcome on the cascade-style replacement.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Dream Cache is a niche piece: it earns a slot in topdeck-matters builds and almost nowhere else, since three mana at sorcery speed for no card advantage is below the power floor of most 99-card lists. Pauper is where the card has seen the most competitive consideration, as the commons card pool is thin enough that sculpting the top three at any cost is occasionally worth it in slower controlling shells. Legacy and Vintage have access to Brainstorm, Ponder, and Preordain, which all do more for less, so Dream Cache sits on the shelf in those formats regardless of legality. Its absence from Modern, Pioneer, and Standard is a non-issue — it wouldn't make cuts there anyway.

Price Context
Current price
$0.21 bulk tier
At $0.21, Dream Cache is deep bulk — buy it out of a commons box, not a single listing. Demand is narrow enough that the price is unlikely to move unless a new topdeck commander pushes it into a wider meta, and even then the ceiling is modest.
