Dread Slag enters as a 3/3 for five mana and then scales up by 1/1 for each card opponents hold — threatening to become a double-digit threat at a table where nobody's empty-handed. The payoff is real, but five mana for a base 3/3 with no evasion means it lives or dies by the hand-size math at your specific table.

In Commander, Dread Slag is at its best — four opponents each holding six or seven cards means this routinely enters as a 27/27 or larger, which closes games fast if it goes unanswered. Outside Commander, the math collapses: in Legacy, Modern, or Vintage, one opponent with a lean hand keeps Dread Slag embarrassingly small, and five mana is a death sentence in those formats where cheaper, more reliable threats dominate. It's legal in Legacy and Vintage but sees no real play there for exactly that reason. Stick to Commander, where the multiplayer hand-size math does the heavy lifting.

Price Context
Current price
$0.29 bulk tier
At $0.29, Dread Slag is firmly bulk — you're paying essentially nothing for a card with genuine late-game ceiling in Commander. Bulk rares with narrow homes rarely climb in price, so don't expect appreciation, but at this price there's no reason not to pick one up if the shell fits.
