Domri's Ambush puts a +1/+1 counter on a creature you control and then makes that creature fight — removal and a buff stapled together for two mana. In Gruul decks that want both effects anyway, it's close to a two-for-one; Halana and Alena, Partners decks in particular love it because the counter feeds their power-sharing engine before the fight resolves.

Halana and Alena, Partners
Halana and Alena, Partners distributes power equal to a creature's power as +1/+1 counters at end of turn, so the free counter from Domri's Ambush directly inflates how much Halana and Alena spread around — every counter you add before the trigger fires is free stats across your board.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Domri's Ambush is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it sees essentially zero competitive play outside Commander. In 60-card formats the floor on interaction is too high — two mana for a conditional kill is well below rate when spot removal and board-affecting spells are cheaper and more reliable. Commander is where it belongs: the format's larger creatures make fight effects actually kill targets, singleton construction rewards flexible cards that do two things, and the counter synergies found in Gruul go-wide or go-tall builds make the buff half genuinely relevant rather than incidental.

Price Context
Current price
$0.33 bulk tier
At $0.33, Domri's Ambush sits firmly in bulk territory — easy to pick up as a throw-in or from a bulk box. Bulk commons and uncommons at this price point rarely move much, so don't expect it to appreciate, but there's no reason to pay more than this anywhere.
